How to recognise it
Find one unobscured polyp and count its tentacles. Avoid counting partially closed flowers or several overlapping polyps.
Similar corals
- Goniopora
- Has 24 tentacles per polyp rather than 12. A distant photo may not separate them.
In the tank
Placement & flow
Use gentle, indirect movement and acclimate the coral to its lighting. Leave room for extension and keep the surface free of settled debris.
Feeding
Fine coral foods may supplement photosynthesis. Introduce feeding gradually and keep track of the effect on nitrate and phosphate.
Space & neighbours
Keep the extended polyps clear of neighbouring corals instead of judging spacing from a closed specimen.
What to watch for
Persistent closure or tissue recession needs investigation. A reputation for being easier than Goniopora does not make every specimen an easy coral.
