Duncan and whisker coral are common names for Duncanopsammia axifuga. A colour or seller prefix does not establish a separate species.

Large flower-like polyps sit on upward-facing tubular branches. When the polyps retract, the branching skeleton becomes easier to see.

How to recognise it

Look for broad oral discs surrounded by tentacles, with separate tubular corallites beneath them. Daytime extension can conceal the skeleton.

Similar corals

Goniopora
Many smaller flower-like polyps extend on stalks from the colony surface rather than the conspicuous Duncan tubes.
Sun Coral
Tubastrea can have similar cups but is non-photosynthetic. Do not give it a Duncan feeding plan on the basis of a closed-polyp photo.

Placement & flow

Low to medium indirect flow suits extended polyps. Tidal Gardens uses roughly 50–150 PAR. Avoid a steady jet against the tissue.

Feeding

Readily catches small meaty foods. Offer manageable portions and check that fish do not steal them.

Space & neighbours

A relatively poor competitor. Keep its expanded polyps out of reach of more aggressive neighbours.

What to watch for

Strong direct flow can compress polyps and damage tissue. If closure persists, inspect for irritation and check water readings and recent changes.
