Euphyllia glabrescens

Torch remains in Euphyllia. Hammer and frogspawn are now placed in Fimbriaphyllia. Seller colour and lineage names describe trade varieties, not separate species.

Family: Euphylliidae

Long, moving tentacles with a single rounded tip are the useful clue. Gold or green colour alone will not establish a torch variety.

How to recognise it

Look at several extended tentacles: torch tips are rounded rather than flattened or repeatedly divided. A tightly retracted colony is much harder to judge.

Placement & flow

Allow room for the full tentacle reach. Use moving, indirect flow; avoid pinning the tissue against its skeleton. Acclimate gradually to your lighting.

Feeding

Photosynthesis supplies much of its energy. Offer small suitable coral foods sparingly; feeding responses vary.

Space & neighbours

Sweeper tentacles can injure neighbours. Give torches space from hammers, frogspawn and other torches; a mixed “Euphyllia garden” is not automatically safe.

What to watch for

Persistent retraction, exposed skeleton or brown disintegrating tissue need prompt attention. Check recent chemistry, light and flow changes. A photo cannot diagnose the cause of tissue loss.
